FLORIDA RAILS: Passenger Trains to the Palms

Welcome to a collection of hopefully-interesting facts and fables dedicated to the past, present and future of the passenger trains and railroads in Florida.

FEC to the Palms During the heritage years (before Amtrak), the three great Florida railroads were the Atlantic Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line and Florida East Coast. Intense competion among them kept passengers moving to and from the Northeast and Midwest, and contributed greatly to Florida's growth and fortunes.

Nowadays, Amtrak runs the daily Silver Meteor, Silver Star and Auto-Train. The 72-mile Miami - Fort Lauderdale - West Palm Beach corridor is serviced by Tri-Rail commuter trains and Miami has its own 21-mile Metrorail elevated rapid transit system and Metromover people-mover. Tampa has its downtown TECO streetcar line, and Jacksonville Transit operates an elevated Skyway line. Numerous private and non-profit organizations operate historic and excursion trains in the state.
